Kate Shannon, PhD, MPH

Dr. Kate Shannon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine (Division of AIDS) at the University of British Columbia, and a Research Scientist at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. She is a social and infectious disease epidemiologist with both quantitative and qualitative expertise who leads research on gender, sexual health and HIV/STIs among women both locally and internationally.
She is currently PI of a five-year longitudinal evaluation of the physical, social and policy environment shaping health outcomes among female sex workers both on and off street in Vancouver and the PI/lead of the Rainier House Evaluation, a residential drug treatment program for female sex workers who use drugs operated by the Portland Hotel Society/ Vancouver Coastal Health. She is also a consultant on a number of global health projects focused on HIV/STI risk environments, transactional sex, and gender-based violence in India and sub-Saharan Africa.
