Amy Salmon, PhD

Dr. Amy Salmon is the Managing Director of the Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Research Network, the Addictions Research Unit Manager of the Women's Health Research Institute at BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre, a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology at UBC, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Victoria's Centre for Community Health Promotion Research. A sociologist of health education, her research centres on the health information, maternity care, and primary health care needs of women with substance use problems. She is currently the Nominated Principal Investigator of several  community-based, participatory research projects including: a 2-year study of substance-using women's experiences of primary health care; 2 longitudinal studies tracking health and social outcomes for mother-infant dyads accessing harm-reduction oriented housing and maternity care programs; a pilot project examining ethical issues in health research involving women with addictions; and a community-driven knowledge synthesis project identifying unmet health education and advocacy needs of women who use drugs. Dr. Salmon is also the Co-leader of the Canada Northwest FASD Research Network Action Team on FASD Prevention from a Women's Health Determinants Perspective,  and the Team Leader of the Downtown Eastside Women and Harm Reduction Research Exchange.
